TheYgent vs n8n: Automation or Local AI Agents?

n8n is a workflow automation platform with native AI capabilities and 400+ integrations. TheYgent is an AI agent builder built around local inference. They overlap on AI agents, and they even share a license. If you are weighing an n8n alternative for private AI agents on local models, here is where each one is stronger.

Checked against n8n 2.42.7’s source and documentation on October 12, 2026. Report an inaccuracy.

The Main Differences

Automation first, or AI first

n8n’s center of gravity is moving data between services: a trigger in one app, a few transformations, an action in another, with AI agent nodes where a model helps. TheYgent’s center of gravity is the model call itself. LLM, retrieval, MCP, router, guardrail, speech, vision, and image nodes are first-class, and the runtime around them records per-node inputs, outputs, timing, and token usage for every run.

Who runs the model

For local models, n8n connects to a model server you run — its Ollama Chat Model node expects an Ollama instance — and you manage that server yourself. TheYgent installs models from an in-app Hugging Face catalog and runs them on its own engines: llama.cpp anywhere, MLX on Apple Silicon, vLLM (experimental) on NVIDIA. Engines start on the first call and unload when idle, and a logical model ID lets you move a model between engines without editing the graph.

What the software sends home

n8n’s anonymous diagnostics are enabled by default until you set N8N_DIAGNOSTICS_ENABLED=false. TheYgent has no telemetry. Its only automatic request is a public price list fetched at startup by the inference plane’s model client library, which carries none of your data. Every network touchpoint is listed here.

Same license family

Both projects use the Sustainable Use License: free to use, modify, and self-host for internal business, personal, and non-commercial purposes, but not to sell or offer as a hosted service. n8n additionally keeps some enterprise features in files under a separate enterprise license.

Which One Should You Pick?

Choose n8n if…

  • Most of your workflows connect SaaS apps, with AI as one step among many.
  • You need ready-made integrations for hundreds of services.
  • You want a mature product with a very large community and template library.
  • Running a separate model server for local models is fine.

Choose TheYgent if…

  • The agent and its models are the product, and they must run on your hardware.
  • You want local speech, vision, and image generation without wiring up extra servers.
  • You want no telemetry by default.
  • You want a span-level trace of every run, and runs that resume after a crash.

They also work together: a published TheYgent agent sits behind a token-authenticated endpoint or an HMAC-signed webhook, so an automation in another tool can call it like any HTTP API.

Questions

Asked and Answered.

Is TheYgent an n8n alternative?

For AI agents on local models, yes. For general workflow automation across hundreds of SaaS apps, n8n is the stronger tool. TheYgent focuses on the model side: it runs local models on built-in engines (llama.cpp, MLX, and vLLM, the last experimental), adds local speech, vision, and image generation, and sends no telemetry.

Can n8n run local models?

n8n uses local models by connecting to a model server you run, most commonly Ollama through its Ollama Chat Model node. n8n itself does not download or execute model weights.

Does n8n send telemetry?

Yes, by default. n8n enables anonymous diagnostics unless you set N8N_DIAGNOSTICS_ENABLED=false (checked against n8n 2.42.7 on October 12, 2026). TheYgent sends no telemetry.
